From my slant he's hiding because he doesn't want to be grown. He wants to be a child again because he isn't ready for the world and he knows it. School didn't prepare him for being a grown-up. Neither did his parents. But it's cool. He'll find his place. The title is 'Time is relative' and that's part of the reason I'm going with this. Also, I'm a bit of a late-bloomer myself so that's why I went with this interpretation.
By the by, this reminds me of the song Universe & U by K.T. Tunstall. Maybe just because he's covering his face...
